Of course, the graphical interfaces of AOL and eWorld are tremendous strengths of both these services - it's an important reason we choose to use them. However, being interrupted by unwanted art downloads can be more of a frustration than a delight, especially if you are in a hurry. Moreover, you pay for time online. Time spent waiting for art - art you don't particularly want - is time (and money) wasted. Also, artwork takes up considerable disk space. ArtValve gives you the power to decide when to get art, and when not to. ------------ Requirements ------------ * System 7.0 or later. * Macintosh SE or later. --------------- Compatible with: --------------- * AOL version 2.5.1 or later. * Any version of eWorld. #### BINHEX asante-ethernet-drivers-551.hqx **** Date: Thu, 6 Apr 1995 23:36:06 -0700 From: ace@tidbits.com (Adam C. Have you wondered why, in 1995, your Macintosh still cannot seem to perform simple multi-tasking like clunky computers made in Ancient Times such as the PDP-11 & IBM 3033? Does the thought of using QuickMail(tm) alone bring your productivity to a grinding halt. (Sorry, CE, your product is useful, however, Quick it is not. I view these modifications as the ultimate form of constructive criticism of your product. Its architecture is creaking under the oppressive legacy of its age.) Well, now your problems are OVER! The enclosed QuickMail(tm) 3.04 update will alter key internal routines of QuickMail to allow asynchronous (background) operation and the following enhancements: o You can hop in & out of QuickMail(tm) during the login process at anytime. o At initial Login only, the QuickMail(tm) Login process will automatically throw itself into the background (i.e., bring the Finder to the Front). This can be disabled by holding the shift key until you see the spinning beachball after you click Connect (or hit RETURN/ENTER). A reminder is displayed within the login dialog when this applies. o All MailManager operations will not seize up your computer for extended periods while it is processing mail. o During Mail sends & receives, you can switch to other applications. Great for ARA users! (Even with file attachments!) o You can switch to other applications while filing lots of messages... Basically, you will regain control of your Macintosh during more of QuickMail(tm)'s operations, making it a truly Friendly program. Look for it in the Communications area of sumex-aim.stanford.edu. Be sure to read the release notes before applying the patches. Enjoy! Robert M. Seretny, moofster@world.std.com (do NOT email CE Software or FWB -- they have nothing to do with these mods!) Subject: CommuniGate FaxSender 2.2 print driver FaxSender is a print (Chooser) driver to use with the CommuniGate System. It employs the same Address Books panel as the CommuniGator application, and it can be used with any application that supports printing. When "FaxSender" is selected in the Chooser, using the Print command in any application results in "printing" of the open document on a remote fax machine. In order to avoid switching between your regular printer driver and FaxSender, you may want to install the "FaxSwitcher" extension. To install the fax print driver, drag the the FaxSender and the FaxSwitcher icons and drop them on the System Folder icon. Finder will route them to the Extensions folder. The FaxSender works on behalf of the application, so it keeps the server session open (avoiding a need to reconnect) till the application quits. Since this new version of the FaxSender employs AppleEvents, the application you use to send faxes should support AppleEvents (most modern applications support AppleEvents). In case your application does not support AppleEvents, please use the FaxSender drivers in the Old Drivers folder, and notify Stalker about the problem: the server "back door" used with the old drivers will be closed soon, so the old drivers will continue to work for few months only. The latest version of the FaxSender can be found at: http://www.stalker.com or ftp://ftp.stalker.com Changes since last upload: 2.2 * The FaxSender uses the "front door", i.e. the AppleEvents-based interface to the CommuniGate Server now. Old drivers used the PPC-based "back door", which will be removed soon. This resulted in: * Server-based address books can be modified from the FaxSender now. * User settings (user name, etc) from the CommuniGate Server are used now. * More stable work on old low-end machines. #### BINHEX communigate-client-23.hqx **** From: support@stalker.com (Technical Support, Stalker Software, Inc.) It allows you to work with all your messages: e-mail, fax, voice, pager, etc. You can use it on the same computer the CommuniGate server is installed on, and you can install and use it on other computers connected to the server via network. The CommuniGate User Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator application as your messaging environment. It provides information about: - message composing; - address books; - mailboxes; - operations on messages; - miscellaneous CommuniGator features; CommuniGator is used to manage the CommuniGate Server, too: to configure the server itself or the modules it runs, to control the modules and their queues, etc. The CommuniGate System Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator application to maintain your CommuniGate Server. See the CommuniGate System Guide for installation instructions. New in this version 2.3 ------------------------ * The "inline input" method is implemented (to enter 2-byte characters, as Kanji). * Aliases can be used for the "Mail for xxxxx" folders. * The Find Selection menu command is implemented. It works for subjects and message texts only. * When the server connection drops, unfinished letters can be saved on the disk. * Font and keyboard script synchronization is implemented. * The Address Record dialog box displays the number of failed attempts now. * The "Can Link to Server over Network" message in the User Editor is implemented. * The "Postmaster" notification is implemented. * Queue windows show the "To"-type address if a message have both To and Cc addresses. * The editing commands are supported in the Select Address dialog box. * The new Server 2.4 address states are displayed (suspended, delayed, etc) * When forwarding a fax, pages can be removed from the new letter by choosing the Clear command. * New method for disconnecting is implemented. #### BINHEX communigate-fax-gate-195.hqx **** From: support@stalker.com (Technical Support, Stalker Software, Inc.) Subject: CommuniGate FaxGate 1.9.5 The FaxGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting fax messaging. It converts messages to the fax format and sends them to remote fax machines. The module can receive incoming faxes and route them as messages to the recipient(s). The module is multi-line, i.e. it can support several fax lines simultaneously. When installed together with the Voice Gate, FaxGate can route incoming faxes to any recipient (locally or over e-mail), it can implement fax-on-demand and other fax-center features. The FaxGate supports Class 2 and Class 2.0 fax modems connected via serial ports. Make sure that your modem really supports Class 2 or Class 2.0 faxing before you try it with FaxGate. Many old fax modms support fax Class 1 only. To compose and send messages as faxes, you can use not only the CommuniGator application, but also the print driver "FaxSender". The latest version can be obtained at: http://www.stalker.com or ftp://ftp.stalker.com Updates since last posted ----------------------- 1.9.5 * When processing the *.faxconv addresses, the "remote-printer.user" name is generated instead of the name "X" to provide compatibilities with non-CommuniGate "tpc.int" (free fax) servers. * "*.facs" domain domains are supported in the same manner as "*.fax" to allow redirecting only certain numbers to local FaxGate (and its fax modems) while other fax messages are routed to some other, external services. #### BINHEX communigate-file-gate-11.hqx **** From: (Technical Support, Stalker Labs) support@stalker.com Subject: CommuniGate FileGate 1.1 The FileGate is a CommuniGate communication module that transfers messages to and from plain text files. Applications can use the FileGate to send messages: if an application composes a message as a plain text file and places that file in the FileGate OutBox folder, the FileGate reads it and submits the message to the system in the same way as if that messages was read from the Internet. Applications can use the FileGate to receive messages: if a message is addressed/routed to FileGate, the part of the address is used as a name of a folder or a text file inside the FaxGate InBoxes folder. If a folder is found, the FileGate stores the message in that folder as a plain text file. If a text file is found, the FileGate appends the message (converted to the plain text format) to the file. So, each application can have its own InBox and it can receive messages either by scanning the folder and reading the text files found, or by reading the mailbox text file. The FileGate allows to use the CommuniGate Server with some mailers that can exchange messages via the file system. For example, you can use Eudora in the "uucp" mode on machines connected to the File Server that also runs the CommuniGate Server. It is especially useful if you use PPP on the CommuniGate Server: since the current version of MacOS does not allow to use TCP/IP via Ethernet if you use PPP, computers on your Ethernet network cannot access the Server via the regular SMTP and POP protocols. Revision History 1.1 * The From line (in the uucp routing format) is added to the messages stored. * Storing messages in text file mailboxes is implemented. * Processing of the From lines in the incoming messages (in the OutBox) is implemented. #### BINHEX communigate-pager-gate-14.hqx **** From: support@stalker.com (Technical Support, Stalker Software, Inc.) Subject: CommuniGate PagerGate 1.4 The PagerGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting wireless paging. The module uses one or several regular modems. It calls host computers of paging service companies and transfers the messages along with the recipients' pager IDs. The host computers then deliver the messages to the recipients' pagers. As any other CommuniGate module, PagerGate can be used even if you don't have it installed on your computer or network: you can use any other CommuniGate Server with PagerGate via Internet (see below). Since there are many companies providing paging service, and each company uses its own pager IDs, you need to know two things in order to send a message to somebody's pager: the ID of that pager, and also the name of the paging service provider. The PagerGate module supports the TAP protocol (used by US paging services), it is multi-line, and it supports connections with several paging hosts. When you configure the PagerGate module, you create entities ("lines") for each service company you want to be able to use for paging. When done, you address a pager as dddd%nnnn, where dddd is the ID of the pager, nnnn is the name of the paging company. Sample: 777777%PageMart Updates since last posted: 1.4 * The Maximum Page Length setting is implemented. Sending long messages as sets of short pages is implemented. * Bug fix: the '$n' format symbol combination worked as the '$F' combination. #### BINHEX communigate-pop-gate-201.hqx **** From: support@stalker.com (Technical Support, Stalker Software, Inc.) Subject: CommuniGate POPGate 2.0.2 The POPGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting E-mail message transfer using the POP Internet protocol (RFC1725) via TCP/IP networks. MIME (RFC 1341) support and various attachment encoding methods are provided within the CommuniGate Server kernel itself. The POPGate module supports multi-stream communications. For each registered user, POPGate can retrieve messages from several remote mailboxes. POPGate can retrieve mail for your entire domain using so-called "Unified Domain-wide accounts" and distribute it. The POPGate module can operate as a POP3 server, provide access to CommuniGate user mailboxes for several remote users simultaneously. It can also provide access to Unified-Domain wide accounts. When installed, it runs in background and: * stores all messages sent and received; * enables network access for CommuniGate users, maintains their mailboxes, queues, etc.; * loads and runs CommuniGate modules (i.e. FaxGate, UUCPGate, VoiceGate, etc.) and creates the run-time environment for those modules; * maintains system activity log; * implements routing algorithms; * maintains a resource database and provides access to that database for CommuniGate users and CommuniGate modules (fax cover pages, sounds, voice scripts, info tables, etc.). The CommuniGate services can be accessed with the CommuniGator client software. The client software allows you to compose and read messages, to manage your mailboxes, etc. It is also used by CommuniGate administrator to configure, maintain, monitor and control the CommuniGate server - locally or remotely. When the POPGate and SMTPGate modules are installed, the CommuniGate Server can be used as a messaging server for clients running not only the CommuniGator application, but plain POP-based mailers (as Eudora and Claris Emailer) - on any platform. Dejal's Quoter FKEY was written as a direct result of a need on a local Mac BBS. My Quoter FKEY can be used on any BBS or elsewhere, when replying to other people's messages, so that people reading your reply can see what specifically you are replying to. Quoting on a BBS is normally done by prefixing each line of text by a "> " sequence, e.g. > This is a quote. Since words can wrap differently when quoted, doing this manually for quotes other than very short ones is a real pain. With Dejal's Quoter FKEY, you can concentrate on the message, not the hassle of quoting it -- the FKEY does all the work for you. It automatically handles word wrapping, quoting, and even nested quotes, and optionally plays a user-specified sound. There are many different cases this program handles, but you will find that it always (or at least almost always) delivers consistent quotes. David Sinclair Dejal Userware |\ ._ . _ . Initially these cards used an AMD chipset, but these were replaced by National ethernet chips in a redesign. A quick inspection of the board will reveal which driver to use AMD chips: Dove FastNetIII.800K.sit.hqx National: Dove FastNetIIIn.800K.sit.hqx As the filenames indicate these are images of the 800K Dove installer disks which have been compressed using StuffitDeluxe 3.0.5. Instead of supplying a disk image, I probably could have just sent an archive with the install script etc, but I wasn't 100% certain of getting everything needed. NB most of these disks are occupied by a cut-down System 6.0.7 including old versions of AppleTalk etc. I can't remember whether the installation includes these old network components, so watch out! It could be the time anyway to upgrade with Apple's NSI 1.3 which includes AppleTalk 58. PS These drivers were released soon after System 7, but I'm sure there must be some people like me who'll find them useful. The following email also attests to Dove's continued existence with the potential to supply driver updates for other products. I only recently changed to System 7 and initially these drivers wouldn't work because they conflicted with the old driver I had *manually* installed into System 7. While that old driver wouldn't work with AppleTalk, it worked fine for MacTCP. Before I worked out the cause of the problem I did fresh System installs and verified the new drivers work OK for System 7.0, 7.0 tuned, and 7.1. I have since upgraded to AppleTalk 58 and MacTCP 1.1.1 without problem, though the card isn't as fast as a Quadra 950's built-in ethernet! cheers, Danny Thomas (vthrc@mailbox.uq.oz.au) Return-Path: Delivery-Date: Received: from colossus.apple.com by bunyip.cc.uq.oz.au with SMTP (PP); Sat, 9 Jan 1993 00:21:41 +1000 Received: from [17.130.8.47] by colossus.apple.com with SMTP (5.65/7-Aug-1992-eef) id AA20688; Fri, 8 Jan 93 06:15:05 -0800 for Received: by alink-gw.apple.com (5.65/27-Sep-1991-eef) id AA26062; Fri, 8 Jan 93 06:10:23 -0800 for Date: 08 Jan 93 14:06 GMT From: DOVE.SUPPORT@AppleLink.Apple.COM (Dove Computer, Peter Demers,PRT) Subject: Re: approval sought for placin To: VTHRC@MAILBOX.UQ.OZ.AU Message-Id: <726502235.3405157@AppleLink.Apple.COM> Dear Danny: I'm sorry for the original problems regarding the FastNet driver. Like all our other software, this is a complete and fully functional demo. It is only limited in the fact that it allows for THREE users ONLY to use the system at any one time. Full registration will allow for unlimited numbers of users at very low cost. (please see licencing info included in the docs...) This demo will, though, allow you to delete and replace any of the three users at any time, so it may be fully useful to some in this form, although cumbersome for a multi-user site. E-Mail-GAW is a simple email program. You are a classroom teacher/trainer, and your school is starting to think about linking up to the internet, or bulletin board systems. How can you get the students, and teachers, started until you have the phone lines, modems, and the bulletin boards in place (not to mention the funding ?). E-Mail-GAW can help, as it is an email program which functions on a stand-alone computer, or across a local area network, on Macintosh computers. A Hypercard system, here are some vital characteristics: 1. Multiple users access to public/private email, without requiring difficult administration or phone lines. This system can be used as a "training wheel" for real network email systems, or it can be used as a "tiny area network" email system within a classroom, or among groups via Appletalk networking. Thus it is both a training simulation and useful email system at the same time. 2. Each user logs into the network with password protection. All messages are private, or to mailing lists. 3. Subscribe/unsubscribe to mailing lists. These mailing lists are internal to the program. The users see HOW and WHEN it is advantageous to set up mailing lists. Only the administrator can delete or create mailing lists, but the lists are open to all users. 4. A simple method of allowing others to experience the administrator's role. The system is divided into ADMIN and SYSOP modes. The administrator has control over ALL aspects of the system, and the Sysops can read/delete any messages. This feature is especially useful in training substitutes, or having senior students help administer the system in conjunction with the system administrator. This, to our knowledge, is a rather unique approach to the switch from user to sysop, as it is done on the fly when already logged in. The administrator can choose whomever they wish to designate as "being able to sysop". 5. Filtering... the users may read through large collections of messages using a filter (on date, recipient, sender, or keywords, and any combination of these.) 6. On-line help system, (in colour). We have had users, unfamiliar with email, progress from a rudimentary understanding of email to being able to sysop a system in a few short work sessions using this system. We invite all educators to look at this as your "training wheels" introduction to networked email systems. E-Mail-GAW --copyright by V. After talking to some Apple Tech Support they noted that on many applications it was required that you added 23k of memory allocation to some applications in order for them to start under 7.5.5. Since it was not possible to add memory through the Get Info field the Apple Tech told me that need to Clean Install and get back to 7.5.3. I refused and took my own path to success. I simply hacked the control panel with ResEdit (Apple's unsupported resource editor) and changed the memory allocation from 530k to 700k. I also changed the controll panel's version number from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. After having done this I created a free patch that will fix the Express Modem memory glitch. The best feature of Extra AOL Features is that, when downloading art or otherwise updating the Online Database, the "Update" window is no longer a non-movable model dialog. YAY! Now whenever you're assaulted by the Update dialog, you can switch to other applications, or even switch it to the back and continue your work. 2. The annoying "Reminder: AOL staff will never ask you for your password..." message will be gone from Instant Message and New Mail windows. 3. The "Chat" menu will no longer appear. I thought of this because I was running out of menu bar real estate whenever the Chat menu was enabled (I have a 14" monitor). Also, the Chat Preferences are accessible via the Member Preferences. And I hardly ever accessed the Chat menu to use the Chat Sounds command, and when I did, all I had to do was type "{S Sound.Name}". 4. The Command-L keyboard shortcut has been removed from the Go To menu's "Lobby" command. I found myself in the Lobby far too many times when all I wanted to do was go to a Keyword. 5. There is a very, very cool feature found in Extra AOL Features, but only registered users are allowed to access it. Check out the "About Extra AOL Features" document to see how to register. If you use Apple's Geoport Telecom Adapter (as do I) then you may have noticed that your system memory partition grows by about 400-500k when the modem is on. This is because most all the modem software is loaded into memory. This is done so that the CPU can process in real time all of the modems MOdulation DEModulation functions as Geoport is a 'software' modem. The data pump is the Macintoshes CPU itself. There are no DSP datapumps as in a conventional modem. This is also why your system slows down during a data call. The CPU is running all your apps and acting as a modem datapump as well. Now, after your data call it'd be nice to have a speedy way of reclaiming that 500 odd K you lost to run the modem especially if your tight on RAM. Geoport Shut Down accomplishes this task. Simply open it, click on the Shut Down button and 400-500k is added to the Largest Unused Block field in About This Macintosh as GSD frees up memory. System Requirements: System 7.0 or greater. Generally, LineShare can be used with any modem and with any types of incoming calls, if there is a method to detect the type of a call. Those methods (algorithms) are programmed using the LineShare scripting language. When started, LineShare takes the selected serial port and controls that port itself, running the selected LineShare script. It also creates several "subports" and register them with CTB, so their names and icons appear in port lists of CTB-compatible applications/tools. These virtual subports are for use with communication servers. The number and names of subports to be created are defined in the LineShare script. When a server (like ARA(tm), or FaxSTF(tm), BBS, or Mail) opens such a "subPort", LineShare emulates a modem without connecting the server to the real device. So, several servers can work simultaneously, each sending commands to its own dedicated subport. #### BINHEX line-share-supra-scripts.hqx **** Subject: [*] LineShare scripts for SupraFaxModems Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1993 05:02:14 +0300 From: Vladimir Butenko Organization: STALKER GmbH This set of LineShare scripts allows you to support SupraFaxModems (up to V32bis) with the LineShare 1.2b software - so you can receive faxes, ARA/Hermes/TeleFinder/QuickaMail or other data calls using the same device. And you can make outgoing calls when your BBS/Mail/FAX is waiting for incoming calls. Please note, that all scripts are called Supra Fax2&xxxx. It means that your fax software should work with your Supra modem employing Fax Class 2 commands (FaxSTF defaults to Class 1 for Supra). Also note that only firmware version "H" (or later) really supports incoming call type detection. You can check this with the "ATI3" command - the modem answers with "V1.200-X", where "X" is the firmware version. If your modem has an older firmware version, modem will answer as FAX to all incoming calls. Ask Supra for free ROM upgrade - explaining them the reason. The ARA/LineShare file is attached again - the 12000 bps was missed in the previous one. P.S. "EXAR" scripts where tested with GVC modems - and they seem to work... ZyXEL Fax&Hermes - Fax software and Hermes BBS host. ZyXEL Fax&MultiData - Fax software and TeleFinder and QuickMail hosts Read the docs published with LineShare. To adapt these scripts to non-ZyXEL modems, just open them (they are plain text files) and edit modem commands following the instruction written in the script header comments. We'll publish sets for other modems soon, and we hope to produce the version of LineShare that supports voice features of modern modems. Happy New Year! Such a situation now gives an 'end of file' error. - When unBinHex fails no longer a file remains in the invisible 'Temporary Items' folder. - BinHex coded messages over 64k in length did not decode reliably. - The Outbound Mail window was not updated correctly after a new message was sent. - Added 'open' resource to application and 'kind' resource to preference file. - 'Fwd: ' is added in front of the subject when a message is forwarded. - The AppleScript command 'activate' did not bring IM/Mac to the foreground. - The message size was 10 bytes short after being read. - Disabled default buttons (usually the 'OK' button) use a blended gray on color systems. - Made it pass through the Think C 7.0.4 compiler (thank you Adam!). - Added an option to delete a file when sent (this item does not have a help balloon yet). - Removed a longstanding issue in which all processing comes to a halt when an IM/Mac notification shows. The notification is removed after 1 minute only when a dialog shows. - Outbound messages are stuffed only once and the temporary file is only deleted when all destinations are served. - Sending binary files to more than one host resulted in a corrupted date and time in the second and following outbound message. - Made it pass through the Think C 8.0 compiler. - ISO 8859-1 transliteration menu item did not have a help balloon. - MacsBug installed on a pre-system 7 Macintosh was not detected. - Under System 6.0.x, desk accessories can be launched in IM/Mac's partition by opening them with the option key held down. Doing so did crash IM/Mac once in a while with an address error. - Trying to print (or Page SetupI) with no printer selected (e.g., a fresh system software installation) resulted in a crash. - StuffIt Classic segments have a filetype of 'SegM'. Those were not in the list of filetypes not to compress. - Changed the color of Stop, Note and Caution icons. - Very long pathnames confused the edition of the 'bm.rc' file. Such strings show with an elipsis character in the middle. Of course that character should not be stored in the file like it did before. - Made it compile with 'MW C/C++ 68K 1.2.2' and corrected flagged errors. IM/Mac's soure code is not yet fully compatible with MetroWerks Code- Warrior 6 since the BinHex function was implemented in 68k assembler. - Added 'CNTL' resources for scrollbars and removed embedded code. So, I decided to write a small AppleScript which does the job for me. How it work The script count the files in my FAXcilitate folder and if the count is higher that the previous count it send me a message using Eudora Pro telling me how many faxes arrived. Requirements I designed the script with AppleScript v1.00, to work with FAXcilitate and send messages using Eudora Pro within a UUPC set-up. This mean that the folder where the new faxes arrives in my System Folder and each fax is a separate file. The script use a different Eudora Setting file than my own, this is possible because I use a uucp account and UUPC for Mac enable me to have as many userIDs I want. I don't know exactly how it would be possible to use a different userID within a "real" net access (PPP or SLIP), however I believe that it would be easy to modify the script to use the same Eudora Setting file and move the new message to the "In" folder instead of sending it. The script should also work fine with any other FAX software as long as they store the received faxes in a specific folder in a one fax per file format.
